Cuisinart is a home appliance brand owned by Conair Corporation of the USA. Carl Sontheimer founded this company in 1971. The “food processor” was the first model unveiled at the National Housewares Exposition, held in Chicago in 1973.
In 1986, Cuisinart introduced the chopper and grinder called the Mini Mate. Since then the company has expanded into every kind of kitchen appliance imaginable. Cuisinart was incorporated into Conair Corporation in 1989.
Carl Sontheimer was an engineer, trained at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). The idea of founding Cuisinart came from watching a food preparation machine while travelling in France in 1971. The food lover within him was instantly engaged in the processing of the food while the engineer, wanted to shorten the processing time. Inspired, he decided to make a similar machine for the American market. Sontheimer reverse-engineered the prototype and made refinements to various parts such as the cutting blade, the feeding tube and the discs. And introducing this “Food Processor” at the National Housewares Exposition.
Initially, the Sontheimer invention sold poorly at the grocery and departmental stores, as it was viewed as a high-priced super blender. But in 1975, culinary titans such as Julia Child, James Beard, Jacques Pepin, Craig Claiborne and Helen McCully used the Cuisinart products on their programs. This piece of brilliant marketing caused people to take notice and many wives realised the time-saving usefulness of the gadget. In 1977, Cuisinart’s food processor sales jumped from a few units to 150,000-250,000 units worth $50 million. Cuisinart saw the food processor as an easy and quick way to make fine foods and wholesome dishes.

Evolution of Coffeemakers
Coffee makers are cooking appliances that brew coffee. There are several types of coffee makers that use different brewing principles. For hundreds of years brewing this beverage was an uncomplicated process where the beans were roasted and ground, put in a pan or a pot and hot water poured over it. Then a lid was placed on this mixture for the infusion process to complete. These pots had a bulge in the middle to trap the grounds in the bottom, while the infusion could be poured from a spout at the side.
Another method of making coffee in the 17th century was adding the grounds to the water in the pan and boiling it till it smelled right. Then came the concept of using bags, where these bags with grounds were placed in the kettle of hot water. The longer the infusion time the stronger the coffee. In the 18th century, the Archbishop of Paris, Jean Baptiste de Belloy propounded the idea that coffee should not be boiled. And the first coffee filter using drip brewing called the biggin was created.
It was a two-levelled pot that held coffee in a cloth bag in its upper compartment. The water was poured, into it to percolate through the holes into a bottom compartment and then into the pot below. The decoction would be poured from the spout on the side. The quality of the brew depended upon the size of the grounds – if it was coarse, the decoction would be weak and if fine the decoction would be strong. But the downside of this approach was that this decoction tasted of whatever was used for the cloth bag – be it cotton, burlap or an old sock.
Next, a French inventor made a pumping percolator, where the boiling water in the bottom chamber pushed its way up a tube and percolated its way through the grounds back into the bottom chamber. Around this time the Drip Pot 
with an insulating water jacket and the first metal filter were developed and patented by various inventors.
Today the grounds are placed in a metal or paper filter fitted inside a funnel that is set over a ceramic or glass pot. Water is poured into a separate chamber that heats up to the boiling point and then directed into the funnel. This is called the automatic drip brew.
